prejudice: culture Flashcards

1
Q

Give 2 pieces of evidence to support differing social norms as a reason for prejudice.

A
  • Minard = 80 white american miners had friendly relations towards black miners below ground compared to 20 above ground. Therefore demonstrating that social norms of prejudice towards certain groups can change
  • Rogers and Frantz = found that immigrants in Zimbabwe became more prejudice towards the black population the longer they stayed in the country. Therefore demonstrating that social norms can be assimilated and affect prejudice

A

Al-Zahrani and Kaplowitz = found that Saudi people (a collectivist culture) reported more in-group favouratism and negative out-group bias than American people (an individualistic culture). therefore suggests that collectivism increases prejudice instead of lowers it
