contact hypothesis
prejudice can be eliminated when two groups are brought into contact with one another
illusory correlation
correlation does not equal causation. Perceiving a relationship between variables that have a weak correlation or no correlation at all.
ex. “ the only time i forget my pencil is when we have a test”
implicit theories
ideas about how others think and feel; people’s “unconscious” ideas on the nature of personality
ex. unpredictable people are also dangerous
ingroup bias(favoritism)
tendency to favor and have positive affect for members of one’s own group
outgroup homogeneity
the belief that members of an outgroup’s members are all similar and one’s ingroup members are unique and different.
relative deprivation theory
compare with others who have what they want and then they feel entitled and then deprived.
scapegoat theory
looking for someone to blame for negative experiences of outcomes
ex. hiter and the jews
ex. displacement
social identity theory
humans have need for positive regard and positive interpersonal relationships. need for positive regard and to belong to a group.

also known as subtypes: separate categories for the deviant individual
superordinate goal
a task to eliminate ingroups and for two groups to cooperate
allport contact theory
interracial contact in childhood leads to more positive interracial attitudes and behaviors in adulthood, due to ‘contact’
