What is poractant?
Pig surfactant, given to preterm babies
What are survanta and beractant?
Calf surfactant, given to preterm babies
Name 2 pig surfactants

Name the 5 classes of tocolytic
NSAID Oxytocin receptor antagonist Ca2+ channel blocker B2 agonist MgSO4
What is a tocolytic?
Delays childbirth by inhibiting contractions
Name the B2 agonists used as tolytics
Ritodrine
Terbutaline
What is rotodrine?
A B2 agonist, used as a tocolytic in preterm labour
Name the Ca2+ channel blocker used as a tocolytic
Nifedipine
Name an oxytocin receptor antagonist
Atosiban
What is atosiban used for?
As a tocolytic in preterm labour
Oxytocin receptor antagonist
What NSAID is used as a tocolytic?
Indomethacin
Why is indomethacin used in preterm labour
NSAID so decreases formation of prostaglandins so less uterine contractions
What drugs are given in labour to help with contractions and prevent post partum haemorrhages?
Oxytocin (IV in labour)
Oxytocin and ergotamine IM to prevent haemorrhage
What drug is a PGE2?
Dinoprostone
What is dinoprostone?
A PGE2 drug used in labour to enhance contractions, dilation and cervical ripening
What drugs should be avoided in pregnancy? Name 8
Lithium, cytotoxics, anticonvulsants, iodine, sex hormones, aminoglycoside antibiotics, tertracycline, ACE inhibitors
Role of hCG?
Released by embryo after 5-6 days, rescues corpus luteum and gives +ve pregnancy test
What two drugs are used for abortion?
Prostaglandins (gemeprost)
Progesterone receptor antagonists (mifepristone)
