Pregnancy Flashcards
1
Q
How is trichomoniasis treated in a breastfeeding woman?
A
Single dose of metronidazole, pump and discard milk for 24 hours (metronidazole enters breast milk and may cause loose stools and candidiasis in exposed infants)
2
Q
In a woman with epilepsy, should women still breastfeed while taking AEDs?
A
Yes - benefits outweigh risks. Phenobarb and benzos may cause some sleepiness/irritability in the infant - can stop breastfeeding for a week (pump and dump) then retry again and see if infant tolerates better.

A
Amoxicillin (doxycyline is usually the preferred agent in non-pregnant patients)
