What hormone is produced by medullary thyroid cancer and is thus elevated?
The cancer originates from the parafollicular cells (C cells), which produce the hormone calcitonin.
How is a sickle cell vaso-occlusive pain crisis managed?
Analgesics (NSAIDs, Opioids - IV preferably), hydration. Consider RBC transfusion.
How is acute chest syndrome in sickle cell disease treated?
Ceftriaxone PLUS azithromycin, Intravenous fluids, Pain control
What is acute chest syndrome?
A potentially life-threatening pulmonary complication of sickle cell disease. The diagnosis of ACS requires the presence of a new pulmonary infiltrate on chest x-ray and at least 1 of the following: Fever >38.5 C (101.3 F), hypoxemia, chest pain, or respiratory distress.
