The embryo that started out as a single cell will develop all the characteristics that makes us human.

How long does a trimester last?
Approximately 3 months
What does the umbilical cord do?
While in the uterus the umbilical provides the foetus with food and oxygen from the mother and takes away waste material.
What are three risks to the embryo?
Smoking
Alcohol
Illegal drugs
What are 3 things that alcohol does to the embryo?
-Can cause the baby to have abnormal facial features
-The baby can have a low birthweight
-Can cause the baby to have behavioural problems
What are three things smoking does to the embryo?
-The baby could be born small
-Can damage the developing baby’s lung and brain
-Smoking doubles the risk of abnormal bleeding during pregnancy and delivery
What are 3 things Illegal drugs can do to the embryo?
-If the mother uses opiates like her herion, the baby can be born addicted to it and can go through withdrawal.
-A premature birth
-Use if drugs like cocaine can lead to very serious complications and can cause the baby to have a stroke.
