Predicted Paper 1 Flashcards
Compare the functions of xylem and phloem
Xylem transports mineral and water ions UP the plant in transpiration
Phloem transports sugars UP AND DOWN a plant in translocation
Xylem is made from dead cells, while phloem is made of living cells. Phloem has pores xylem does not. Xylem is hollow and contains lignin, phloem does not. Both are tubular.
Why do organisms need the energy from respiration
Need energy for chemical reactions to build larger molecules from smaller ones
Muscle contractions to allow movement
Keeping warm to maintain a constant temperature suitable for enzyme activity
Active transport
How do plants use glucose from photosynthesis
Converted into starch for storage
Used to produce fat, oil
Used to produce cellulose which strengthens cell wall
Combined with nitrate ions to produce amino acids and protein for growth
Why is potassium need in a plant
Production of flowers and fruit
