Predation Flashcards
What is predation?
Very broadly- any consumption of one organism by another
More narrowly- consumption of another organism resulting in its death
Predation is foraging
Where to hunt, when to more on and what to do with competitors.
Modes of hunting
Pursue, chasing, Stealth, Sit and wait.
Stages of hunting
-Search, Detect, Attack, Capture and consume.
Red Queen (Van Valen 1973)
Predators and prey evolve in reaction to each other. If predator searches, then they evolved better vision and in reaction the prey evolved camouflage.
Risk to predators
In a large group there is a risk to the predator as they may attack. But if predators prey on small groups then they risk not catching one.
Sociality as anti-prey strtergy
- Byrne (1981) More compact with rick
- Kummer et al (1985) larger with risk
Evolution of group living
-Enables group defence of food resources (Wrangham, 1980)
-Provides protection from predators or infanticide (Van Schaik, 1983)
The bigger the group the less the risk of predation but the less resources each individual has.
Why hunt?
-Nutrition (teleki, 1973)
-Hunting for trade-goods?
Meat for sex or male social bonding
-Hunting to assess reliability
Hunting to display prowess
