Airborne Precautions & Diseases

A
  • patient in private room with NEGATIVE pressure air flow
  • patient wears a surgical mask whenever out of room (can only leave if medically necessary)
  • nurse wears a fit tested N95 respirator mask whenever entering room
  • door of room must be closed
  • all on top of standard precautions!

Contact Precautions & Diseases

A

gown & gloves whenever entering the room (mask and goggles follow standard precaution), client care equipment must remain in the room or be disinfected before leaving the room

*Small Pox, Herpes-zoster (Shingles), Varicella-zoster (Chicken Pox), MRSA, VRE, C.diff, Rotavirus, Impetigo, Scabies, Pediculosis (lice), Diphtheria (cutaneous), Hep. A (only if client is incontinent or diapered), RSV

Droplet Precautions & Diseases

A

Mask required when working within 3 feet of the client (everything else follows standard precautions), door can be open

  • Viral: influenza, mumps, rhinovirus, Rubella
  • Bacterial: Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Pertussis (whooping cough), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Group A Streptococcus, Diphtheria (pharyngeal)

Neutropenic Precautions

A

for clients at increased risk of infection/with low neutrophil count!

*clients with: aplastic anemia, on chemo, cancer, hypersplenism, SLE, HIV

NC: strict hand washing, low-microbial diet, disinfect room daily, no plants, frequent assessments of symptoms of infection, can’t drink standing water, only one nurse
