Airborne Precautions & Diseases
- patient in private room with NEGATIVE pressure air flow
- patient wears a surgical mask whenever out of room (can only leave if medically necessary)
- nurse wears a fit tested N95 respirator mask whenever entering room
- door of room must be closed
- all on top of standard precautions!

Standard Precautions
*For all clients in the hospital/facility
Contact Precautions & Diseases
gown & gloves whenever entering the room (mask and goggles follow standard precaution), client care equipment must remain in the room or be disinfected before leaving the room
*Small Pox, Herpes-zoster (Shingles), Varicella-zoster (Chicken Pox), MRSA, VRE, C.diff, Rotavirus, Impetigo, Scabies, Pediculosis (lice), Diphtheria (cutaneous), Hep. A (only if client is incontinent or diapered), RSV
Droplet Precautions & Diseases
Mask required when working within 3 feet of the client (everything else follows standard precautions), door can be open
- Viral: influenza, mumps, rhinovirus, Rubella
- Bacterial: Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Pertussis (whooping cough), Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Group A Streptococcus, Diphtheria (pharyngeal)
What 3 diseases would you follow both airborne and contact precautions?
Small Pox, Herpes-zoster (Shingles), Varicella-zoster (Chicken Pox)
Neutropenic Precautions
for clients at increased risk of infection/with low neutrophil count!
*clients with: aplastic anemia, on chemo, cancer, hypersplenism, SLE, HIV
NC: strict hand washing, low-microbial diet, disinfect room daily, no plants, frequent assessments of symptoms of infection, can’t drink standing water, only one nurse
Does alcohol in hand sanitizer kill C.diff?
NO!
Only hand washing with soap and water is effective.
How long until droplet precautions are no longer needed?
After 24 hours of antibiotics
