What does the CPS do? 5 steps
- Advise the police on cases for possible prosecution
- Review cases submitted by police for prosecution
- Decide to prove the criminal cases investigated by the police if necessary
- Prepare cases for court
- Present those cases in court
Who is the head of the CPS?
Alison Saunders- The director of public prosecutions (DPP)
Who is the head of the CPS’ boss?
The attorney general
What does the code for crown prosecutors do?
Sets out basic principles to follow so the crown prosecutors can make decisions
Stages in the decision to prosecute….
- Evidential test- crown prosecutors must be satisfied that there is evidence is usable to provide a ‘realistic prospect of conviction’
- Public interest stage- if a case passes stage one they must decide if it is appropriate or whether another course of action should be taken
Can you fail the evidential test to move onto the next?
No it must be passed in order for a case to continue

Experienced barristers and lawyers who are responsible for prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the crown
