Pre-Reformation Flashcards
Uh oh, there are three Popes! How did this happen, and how long does it last?
1378-1414
There were two Popes, and then there were three because they met in Pisa and said, “how do we fix the two Pope problem?”
First two Popes refused to retire after electing third pope
What is the Council of Constance, and how long does it last? What is the result?
Pick a new Pope
End up with only ONE Pope; two step down and one has a tantrum the rest of his life
Who is John Wycliffe?
1320-1384
Studied at Oxford University (Math & Theology)
Translated gospels (or most of New Testament)
Lives through the Black Death
Thinks “Maybe God is punishing us for the Hundred Years’ War”
What is Predestination? What does John Wycliffe think about the Pope?
Only a very few people who are selected go to Heaven, and God chose ahead of time; everyone else goes to Hell
Wycliffe thinks: maybe the Pope isn’t a nice man, maybe the Pope is wrong, and maybe the Pope doesn’t go to heaven
What does John Wycliffe think about property ownership? What do Nobles think?
Property ownership by the Catholic church is unethical
Landlords (i.e. nobles) should own this property
Nobles now love Wycliffe
