Pre-Prosthetic Surgery Flashcards
what are examples of excisional surgeries of soft tissue?
- frenectomy/frenoplasty
- papillary hyperplasia
- flabby ridges
- denture induced hyperplasia
- maxillary tuberosity reduction
- retromolar pad reduction
what is papillary hyperplasia?
overgrowth of soft tissue on the palate (usually caused via candida infection)
what is a vestibuloplasty?
ridge extension procedure
- deepens the vestibule
- increases height of alveolar ridge
what are examples of excisional surgeries of hard tissues?
- extraction of teeth/roots
- ridge defect correction (alveoplasty)
- mandibular/maxillary tori
- exostoses
- undercuts
- genial tubercle reduction
- mylohyoid ridge reduction
what are examples of augmentation procedures of hard tissues done in oral surgery?
- autografts
- allografts
- xenographs
- synthetic grafts
- implants
- inferior alveolar nerve relocation
what are autografts in oral surgery?
bone taken from same patient elsewhere in the body & used to graft in the jaw
what are allografts?
bone taken from other humans for grafting purposes
what are xenografts?
bones taken from animals (usually cows)
what are synthetic grafts?
an example is beta tricalcium phosphate
what does unilocular mean?
one single radiolucency
why is a knife-edge ridge problematic for denture wearers?
PAINFUL
- need to raise a flap & smooth ridge off
what is a one-sided flap also known as sometimes?
crestal flap
in what type of dentures do we see denture-induced hyperplasia?
immediate dentures - patients dont come back when denture becomes ill-fitting & this results in trauma and hyperplasia
