Pre-Lab#21 Flashcards

1
Q

Is the external jugular vein easily cut? What is its course?

A

Yeah, b/c it is so superficial.

It lies deep to the platysma & crosses the SCM obliquely

3
Q

IS the EJV or IJV more suited to puncture?

A

IJV is better for needle or catheter insertion

Q

What is the difference b/w IJV on the left & right sides?

A

Right sides go straight down, but left sides have an angle. Better to insert catheter on the right side.

6
Q

How do you hit the vein & not something else when you are putting in a central venous line?

A

guided by ultrasound device

otherwise palpate internal carotid artery & guess where the IJV is laterally.

Q

What is the target of the central venous line?

A
target is SVC
to measure O2 saturation
CVPressure
Long-term IV meds (b/c they cause phlebitis long term in peripheral veins)
dialysis

Q

Aside from the retropharyngeal space, where are other places that are good for spread of infection?

A

right in front of the trachea, behind the thyroid gland

another is under the platysma & over the superficial investing layer of fascia.

11
Q

Where is the carotid body found?

A

it is found as a yellowish grayish body at the bifurcation of the internal & external carotid arteries…
this is a collection of chemoreceptors

Q

What do the chemoreceptors of the carotid body sense? What is this innervated by?

A

pO2, pCO2, pH & temp changes of the arterial blood
branch of glossopharyngeal nerve
“sinus nerve of Herring”

sense BP

innervated by branch of CN9 “sinus nerve of Hering”

Q

How should you check pulses in people with carotid sinus hypersensitivity?

A

radial artery pulse or something

they could faint otherwise if you put any pressure there.

Q

What are some variants of the internal carotid artery position? Is this detrimental?

A

internal carotid artery looped around transverse process of cervical vertebrae–usu w/o symptoms
internal carotid artery w/ loops-usu w/o symptoms
kinking of internal carotid artery b/c caught bone spurs & transverse process of cervical spinal column–problem esp if it happens on both sides

Q

What’s something bad that can happen to the vertebral artery

A

head turned left & rotation of atlas cuts off left vertebral artery–symptoms of stroke

17
Q

T/F Osteophytes on the vertebrae can cause compression of the vertebral artery.

A

True.
