Scene assessment; step 1
number of patients, mechanism of illness or injury, presence of hazards, need for specialized equipment, bystander information, need for covid 19 precautions
Scene assessment; step 2
Position of patient, presence of chest rise, is the patient tracking EMS, presence of any emotional or respiratory distress, skin colour or condition, presence of any bodily fluids, presence of any angulated fractures
Assess c-spine, LOC, ABC; step 3
Are spinal precautions required or not, level of consciousness (AVPU, GCS), airway status, breathing (rate, depth, quality), circulation (rate, depth, quality)
Delegate interventions to partners; step 5
Complete set of vitals, IV initiation (include size, location, lock or line), 4 and 12 lead ECG, AED pads on the chest (only for life threatening precautions), stretcher
Preform a differential diagnoses assessment on the patient; step 6
Consider all the information (why 911 was called, physical findings, LOC, ABC. Prioritize the differential diagnosis discussed earlier from most life threatening to least life threatening, perform a head to tow assessment while considering each differential diagnosis, until you identify a working diagnosis.
