Pre-Elementary Anatomy Questions Flashcards
When we talk about correct posture & our skeleton providing support for our framework, tell me some functions of the skeleton.
- Provides support for soft tissue e.g. muscles
- Is the basis for movement
- Provides protection of vital organs
- Blood cell formation
- Is a store for minerals
Identify the main factors that limit turnout in a dancer.
Bony structure, tightness of the capsular ligaments, muscle elasticity, strength of the hip and external rotators.
Why must heels be lowered after jumps?
To aid as a shock absorber and decrease risk of calf and shin problems.
What is the importance of warming up and warming down? What are the reasons for this?
To decrease muscle soreness, increase muscle strength and performance, increase joint mobility and flexibility, better body temperature control in cold weather.
What must we not do when stretching?
Ballistic or bouncing movements.
How long must a static stretch be held for to be effective?
Longer than 10 seconds and up to 30 seconds.
What should be included in a warm up?
General movement of all body parts to increase circulation, large muscle groups should be used first to increase circulation, progression from easy to complex steps and routines, gentle not maximal, variety to prevent boredom.
What does core strength achieve?
It maintains correct lumbar and pelvic alignment during activity - this then allows firm foundation for movement of the limbs.
What do dancers need to be able to perform with ease and to the best of their ability?
Strength and flexibility, but this is an individual progression and care is needed not to overtrain.
What is fatigue?
It is the body’s way of telling you to rest, but dancers can learn to manage fatigue and maximise their performance. Management of fatigue can be carried out by cool down, physical rest, nutrition and fluid and mental relaxation to aid sleep.
What are the different ways we can practice?
- It should not be too long
- More frequent and shorter sessions are best
- Part practice is better for complex movements
- Limbs could be practiced first, then joint with movement
- Practice segments from easy to difficult
- Take slower and use support for balance skills
- Mental practice
