Pre Cambrian Life Flashcards
Possible early fossil
Archean Stromatolite
A string of what may be prokaryotic cell
believed to be resting stages of eukaryotic planktonic algae
similar to modern dinoflagellates, represent the oldest body fossils at 2.5
billion years
Acritarchs
COMPOSED OF EUKARYOTIC CELLS.
THEIR ORIGIN MUST THEREFORE POSTDATE THE
ORIGIN OF THIS CELL TYPE
MULTICELLULAR ANIMALS
THE OLDEST COMMON AND WIDELY ACCEPTED METAZOANS ARE MEMBERS OF THE
EDIACARAN FAUNA.
REPRESENTS THE OLDEST, WELL KNOWN, DIVERSE SET OF MULTICELLULAR ORGANISMS.
THEY ARE DISTRIBUTED IN ROCKS FROM JUST ABOVE THE TILLITES OF THE LAST PRECAMBRIAN GLACIATION TO THE PRECAMBRIAN-CAMBRIAN
BOUNDARY
EDIACARAN FAUNA
STRUCTURALLY, THREE GROUPS OF ORGANISMS SEEM TO BE PRESENT IN THE FAUNA:
(I) THOSE WITH RADIAL SYMMETRY, WHICH MAY
BE RELATED TO JELLYFISH OR CORALS;
(II) THOSE WITH BILATERAL SYMMETRY,
POSSIBLY RELATED TO MORE ADVANCED
ORGANISMS SUCH AS WORMS OR ARTHROPODS;
AND
(III) THOSE WITH AN UNUSUAL SYMMETRY THAT
MAY NOT BE REPRESENTED BY LIVING GROUPS.
AN EXAMPLE OF THE RADIAL GROUP OF SPECIES IS_______________, AN ORGANISM WITH CONCENTRIC RINGS, POSSIBLY A JELLYFISH.
CYCLOMEDUSA
AN EXAMPLE OF THE BILATERAL GROUP IS
SPRIGGINA
IS AN ORGANISM THAT CAN BE
INTERPRETED AS EITHER A MEMBER OF A
MODERN GROUP OR SOMETHING TOTALLY
DIFFERENT
