Pre-analytical sampling and sample handling Flashcards
What is pre-analytics?
all determining factors/processes which influence a specimen before it is analysed in the lab. This includes specimen collection, transport and sample processing
What is haemolysis?
The breakage of RBC membrane and causes release of intra-cellular components haemoglobin into surrounding fluid.
what are the causes of haemolysis?
results from certain health conditions
improper specimen collection and vigorous handling
prolonged tourniquet time
difficult venepuncture/poor blood flow
what does haemolysis result in?
pink/red tinge to the serum or plasma. this can lead to inaccurate results and specimen rejection by the laboratory
what are the routes of lab acquired infections?
inhalation ingestion via hand/mouth contact absorption through cuts and grazes inoculation by sharps injuries contact between mucous membranes and contaminated materials
