What is register?
The type or variety of language the speaker has chosen to use.
How do you identify the register of a text?
Is slang used?
Is jargon used?
Are contractions used?
What is audience?
Who the text is aimed at.
What is the mode of a text?
Described as written mode, spoken mode, mixed mode or multimodal.
What is mixed mode?
Texts that have both written and spoken.
What does multimodal mean?
Texts conveyed through pictures and text.
What is the purpose of a text?
The objective of the text.
What are the 6 purposes of texts?
- Inform
- Persuade
- Instruct/Advise
- Entertain
- Transactional (give/gain information)
- Interactional (building relationships)
What is the subject?
The focus of a text.
How can we identify the subject?
Looking at the lexical field of a text.
What is the maxim of quantity?
What you say in response to someone should be no more or less than needed.
What is the maxim of quality?
Speak/write honestly.
