Practicles Flashcards
What is a pipette?
A pipette is a glass container which you can suck a liquid into. It allows you to measure a liquid extremely precisely.
What is a burette?
A burette is a glass container which you can fill with a liquid and measure, and then release it slowly through a closable gap.
What is Titration?
Titration is the process of creating a salt from an acid and alkali. You firstly use an indicator to find out how much acid and how much alkali is required to create a neutral solution. You then repeat it without indicator and evaporate some of the liquid of to allow the solution to crystallise.
What is Excess Base?
This is the process of creating a salt from an acid and an insoluble base. Firstly, you react excess of the base with the acid and then filter out the excess. You then evaporate some of the water and then leave the solution to crystallise.
What is Precipitation?
This is the process of getting an insoluble salt from reacting two solutions together. Firstly, you react the two solutions together and then extract the insoluble salt from the solution using filtration. Then you wash the residue with distilled water and you leave it to dry.
How can you compare the rate of reactions with different circumstances if they produce precipitates?
You draw a cross on a piece of paper and put it under the reaction. When you combine the two solutions, you can time the amount of time it takes for the cross to no longer be visible. You can then compare this to a reaction occurring at a different temperature.
