Salah
Muslim word for prayer. Muslims do this five times a day and have special movements and actions. It is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Wudu
This is when Muslims wash their faces, ears, mouth, hands and feet before prayer. They do this to feel physically and mentally ready to stand before Allah. It also symbolises spiritual cleanliness
Imam
This is a Muslim who leads prayer at the Mosque and can give advice to fellow Muslims.
Halal
This means ‘allowed’ and shows what Muslims are allowed to eat, e.g. Lamb, cheese, fish, fruit, chicken, vegetables, beef.
Haram
This means ‘forbidden’ and shows what food Muslims are not allowed to eat, e.g. Alcohol, shellfish, pork.
Hajj
This is when Muslims go on pilgrimage (religious life journey) to Mecca, which they must do once in their lifetimes, unless they are too ill or have to look after someone
Ramadan
This is the time of year that Muslims fast for a month during daylight hours.
Zakah
This is another of the five pillars, where Muslims give 2.5% of their earnings to charity
Shahadah
This is the statement of belief that all the Muslims say.
