Practice Qs Flashcards
Differences between distillation and evaporation
Evaporation-natural process, at room temp
Distillation-heating the liquid to produce vapor
Neuroplasticity
Allows our brains to reorganize pathways, create new connections, and, in some cases, even create new neurons.
Ossification
the process of laying down new bone material by cells named osteoblasts
Peripheral Nervous System
Transport signals to and from CNS
feeds information into your brain from most of our senses
carries signals to allow you to move muscles
Acetylcholinesterase (AChE)
-immediately breaks down acetylcholine (ACh)
-primarily found at postsynaptic neuromuscular junctions, especially in muscles and nerves
-lack of it–>leave ACh to activate receptors continuously and propagate action potential
Gangrene
Death of body tissue due to a lack of blood flow or a serious bacterial infection.
Stroke
-high blood pressure, diabetes, and high blood cholesterol
-blood vessels rupture or narrowing
Glial Cells
Carry out supporting functions for nerve
Ischemia
A condition in which blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted or reduced in a part of the body
Encephalopathy
a group of conditions that cause brain dysfunction
Wernicke encephalopathy (WE)
an acute neurological condition characterized by a clinical triad of ophthalmoparesis with nystagmus, ataxia, and confusion
schema
a mental concept-allow individuals to understand what to expect from diverse experiences and circumstances
Bone marrow functions
produces red blood cells that carry oxygen
white blood cells that prevent infection
platelets that control bleeding
protein electrophoresis
separate mixtures of DNA, RNA, or proteins according to molecular size
peptide bond
not involved in quaternary structure; it defines primary structure
