Describe how to carry out the density practical for an irregular shape.

A

1) Fill the eureka can with water so that the object is fully submerged in water.
2) Place a measuring cylinder under the eureka cans spout to collect the displaced water.
3) The water will slowly displace out of the eureka can and will collect into the measuring cylinder. The volume of water displaced = volume of the shape.
4) Measure the mass using a mass balance
5) Use d = m/v to find the density.

  • Mass balance
  • Insulating container (and lid) packed with cotton wool for insulation to prevent energy loss
  • Thermometer
  • Metal cylinder for solid and electric heater for liquid.
  • Power supply (either joulemeter or ammeter and voltmeter.)

Describe how to carry out the practical for finding the specific heat capacity of a substance.

A

1) Measure the mass of the substance using a mass balance.
2) Measure the temperature of the substance before providing with power supply.
3) Note the power supplied and then turn the power on.
4) Once it has increased by a number (e.g. 10 degrees C), turn the heat off.
5) Place numbers into equation. E = mc(theta)
