Q
understand how the formulae of simple compounds can be obtained experimentally, including metal oxides, water and salts containing water of crystallisation
A
FINDING THE FORMULA OF A METAL OXIDE
* Weight crucible + lid
* Add sample of magnesium into cruclibe, put lid back on and weigh (calculate the mass of the metal)
* Strongly heat the crucible with the lid on (to ensure no Mg oxide escapes) over a bunsen burner for several minutes
* Lift the lid from time to time to allow air flow into the crucible
* Stop heating when there is no sign of further reaction
* Allow to cool and reweigh
