Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons
A Hydrocarbon is a compound that contains only hydrogen and carbon
What is an isomer
Isomers are molecules with the same molecular formula but with a different structure.
What is a functional group
A functional group is a group of atoms within an organic compound that give that compound its unique chemical and physical properties
For example the functional group of an alcohol is the -OH group and that of alkenes is the C=C carbon to carbon double bond.
What are homologous series
A homologous series is a group of organic compounds that have the same functional group.
* Similar chemical properties
* Trends in physical properties
* Same general formula
What is difference between alkanes and alkenes
- Alkanes have a single bond, general formula is: CnH2n+2
- Alkenes have a double bond, general formula is CnH2n
