How do you test for starch?
A
Iodine solution added to a sample - positive result will be blue / black

How do you test for reducing sugars?
A
Add Benedict’s solution to the sample and heat it up for a few minutes
Positive results is brick red (precipitate)

How do you test for non-reducing sugars?
A
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the sugar solution and boil for 5 minutes, and then neutralise with sodium hydrogen carbonate. Then add Benedict’s solution and heat and observe colour change (blue -> red)
