Practical factors Flashcards
Personal characteristics of the researcher
Researchers have different skill sets that make certain methods easier e.g. good communication skills, good memory for observation
Time available
Some methods take longer than others e.g. unstructured interview, observations - may be a problem if the researcher has a deadline
Access to participants
Some methods will make gaining access easier with certain p’s
Sample size
If you have a big sample you might need a quicker method but a small sample will need in depth methods like interviews
Funding
Researchers have to apply for funding and some organisations prefer different methods e.g. governments tend to prefer quantitative methods
Cost
The researcher then needs to work within the budget the funding gives them; some methods are more expensive
Types of data
Qualitative or quantitative
Research opportunities
Sometimes events occur quickly with no time to prepare
Subject matter
e.g. questionnaires would be hard for people with limited English
