practical Flashcards
What was the aim of our practical?
The aim of this study was to investigate whether people with a high internal or external locus of control are more obedient
State the fully operationalised alternative hypothesis.
There will be a significant difference between levels of reported obedience from open/closed questions using likert scales and their locus of control measured by 3 questions of locus of control using self report questions on a likert scale
State the fully operationalised null hypothesis.
There will be statistical difference between levels of reported obedience measured by open/closed questions using a likert scale and locus of control measured by 2 questions of LoC using a self-report questions on a likert scale and any change will be due to chance
Fully operationalised IV
Whether people will have a high internal/external locus of control (measured by 3 questions on LoC ON A LIKERT SCALE)
Fully operationalised DV
By asking 15 open/closed questions using self -report questions in obedience
What sample did we use in our practical?
Oppurtunity sampling, aged 16-17. 20 f and 3 m , from Reigate and Banstead
content in questionnaire
4 likert scale eg How far do you agree with this statement ‘ i feel i have little influence over things that happen to me’ (1 strongy disagree and 5 strongly agree)
5 closed eg Do you think vhildren should always obey their parents (mark one oval)
4 open ended eg give a time you obeyed orders even if you didn’t agree with orders being given
controls in questionnaire
Conducted on the 16th of Jan and lasted for a week. Online in a google docs questionnaire. Quantitive and qualitive data collected. All given same questionnaire & instructions
Procedure in our practical
- Gave ppts a briefing, allowing them the right to withdraw and assuring confidentiality of their answers
Ppts completed the questionnaire privately with no time limit - Once complete we gave a debrief (using the same as in the beginning due to it being scripted), giving the ppts another chance to withdraw
- After collecting data we used thematic analysis to decipher reoccurring themes in the 4 open questions
- Using this we created codes for themes of attitudes towards obedience and refined the categories overtime
- We also worked out each ppts locus of control used our 3 likert questions
State results of LoC and External
Internal mean: 8.86
External mean: 8.86
Mode: 8
Median: 8
Range: 2
No significant difference between results for internal LoC and external LoC
State the results of the qualitative data.
Main themes were
Obedience to a person they saw in authority
Obedience to avoid negative consequences
Conclusions
The standard deviation for internal and external was both 0.0392 and people mainly obeyed to avoid negative consequences like being arrested unless it was someone in danger. Overall showing no significant difference between internal and external locus of control therefore accepting null hypothesis
