20
Q

Height of doors must not be less than

A

7’-0”

21
Q

Where a pair of doors is required, one of the doors must be not less than X wide

A

36”W

22
Q

A

23
Q

Exit access doorways must open in what direction

A

Direction of travel

24
Q

(2) exit access doorways must be provided from any space where the occupant load

A

exceeds 49 in occupancy groups A, B, and M

25
Q

Where is slip resistant floor material most important?

A

Slip resistance is most important in areas where grease and/or water could be present to ensure that occupants do not slip, fall and injure themselves. Tile, terrazzo, stone and other smooth surfaces can be potentially dangerous, especially when wet or covered with grease.

26
Q

What is the push / pull clearance on doors?

A

18” pull / 12” push (for all doors in NCIDQ)

27
Q

What areas require exhaust fans for proper ventilation?

A

Per 1202.5.2.1, Bathrooms - all rooms with bathtubs, showers, spas, and similar fixtures must have mechanical ventilation.

28
Q

Identify minimum handrail extension at stair landings, both bottom and top of stairs.

A

Refer to Section 505.10 Handrail Extensions.

At the top of a flight of stairs, handrails must extend horizontally above the landing for a minimum of 12” beginning directly above the landing nosing.

At the bottom of a flight of stairs, handrails must extend at the slope of the stair flight for a horizontal distance of one tread depth beyond the bottom tread nosing. Extensions must return to a wall, guard, or the landing surface, or be continuous to the handrail of an adjacent stair flight.

29
Q

Where should smoke alarms be installed in a residential application?

A

Install at least 10ft from cooking appliances. Install smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and at least 3’ away from the door to bathrooms with a tub or shower.

Refer to F907.2.10.3 and F907.2.10.4

30
Q

Locate smoke / heat detectors where required by code in a residence.

A

Refer to IBC 2018 Section 907 Fire Alarm and Detection Systems

Alarms need to be located in each bedroom and in the hall outside each bedroom.

So basically ONLY bedrooms for detectors. This is different than smoke alarms.

31
Q

Which receptacles in bedrooms must have an Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (AFCI) Protection?

A

Per NFPA 70 210.12(A), AFCI Protection is required in dwelling unit kitchens, family rooms, dining rooms, living / parlor / library rooms, bedrooms, sunrooms, rec rooms, closets, hallways, laundry, and similar areas.

USB Outlets do not require AFCI unless paired with an outlet of normal voltage/amperage.

32
Q

Define the common path of egress travel

A

the portion of the exit access travel distance is measured from the most remote point of each room, area, or space to that point where the occupants have separate and distinct access to two exits or exit access doorways.

33
Q

What is the clear width at 180 Degree turn?

A

You must show the width a minimum of 42” approaching the turn with 48”min during the turn. Refer to 404.2.3 maneuvering clearances.

34
Q

What is required spacing for electrical outlets in a residence?

A

Per Electrical Code, outlets should be located so that no point along the floor line is more than 6’ from an outlet. The location of USB does not negate the need for spacing. But there must be 12’ between all outlets.

So basically 6’ is the minimum when located on a corner and/or a wall adjacent with an outlet.

35
Q

Where may 240V outlets be required in a residence?

A

Dishwasher, range, washer, dryer, hot water heater, and air handler unit all may require 240V.

Note that refrigerator is not included.

Pay attention to the programming; if an appliance is gas-powered, it will usually require 120V.

36
Q

What is a dead load

A

dead loads are usually permanent, non-movable loads. Examples are the weight of the building, including the floor, pillars, or roofing structure

37
Q

What is a gravity load

A

Loads that exert their force downwards, like gravity

38
Q

What is a live load

A

Loads that are non-permanent, movable loads, such as people, furniture, and equipment (like a dense filing system), and other more specific types such as lateral and dynamic loads

39
Q

What is a lateral load

A

Loads that exert force from natural occurrences, like wind and earthquakes (seismic), or even explosions. These usually exert force in more directions than downwards.

40
Q

What is a dynamic load

A

Loads created from impacts include moving/stopping elevators, snow loads, or a car driving across a bridge. The difference is that these forces change more quickly than static or other types of live loads

41
Q

Typical stud distance (on center) for residential

A

16” OC

42
Q

Typical stud distance (on center) for commercial

A

24” OC
