How to safety use PPE
- keep gloved hands away from face
- avoid touching PPE
- remove gloves if they become torn and perform hand hygiene before donning new gloves
- limit surface and items touched
Sequence for doffing PPE
Gloves, face shield, gown, mask, immediately perform hand hygiene
Standard precautions
Aka universal precautions, assumes all blood and body fluid of any patient could be infectious
Expanded precautions
CONTACT PRECAUTIONS: gown, gloves
DROPLET PRECAUTION: surgical masks
AIRBORNE PRECAUTIONS: particulate respirator and negative pressure isolation room
Hand hygiene
- required for both standard and expanded precautions
- perform after removing PPE and between patient contacts
