What are the 5 steps of face shield disinfection?
- While wearing gloves, carefully wipe the INSIDE, followed by the OUTSIDE of the face shield or goggles using a clean cloth or paper towel and a DETERGENT solution (soap) or cleaner wipe.
- Carefully wipe the OUTSIDE of the face shield or goggles using a wipe or clean cloth saturated with EPA-REGISTERED HOSPITAL DISINFECTANT solution (e.g. CaviWipes/Cavicide Spray) following the manufacturer’s directions.
- Wipe the OUTSIDE of face shield or goggles with clean WATER or ALCOHOL to remove residue.
- Fully dry (air dry or use clean absorbent towels).
- REMOVE GLOVES and perform HAND HYGIENE
What are PPE Donning Steps?
- identify and gather the proper PPE to done
- Perform proper hand hygiene before touching PPE
- Isolation Gown
- Respirator/face mask (fit nose piece first, extend resp, pt strap on crown of head, then put bottom strap on head at base of neck)
- Performs seal check on respirator, no air should escape
- Goggles
- Perform hand hygiene
- Gloves. Gloves should cover wrist of the gown.
What are PPE Doffing Steps?
Do Doffing before leaving pt room.
- Discard gloves (glove in glove, beaking method)

Leave pt room
- Hand hygiene
- Remove goggles
- Remove respirator (bottom strap 1st then crown strap)/ face mask- dont touch the mask just straps
- Perform hand hygiene
What are 10 the steps in the hand washing WHO technique?
- Wet hands
- Apply soap to cover all hands
- Rub palms over each other( palm on top of palms, interlaced fingers)
- Rub palms together (palm in palm, interlaced finger)
- Scrub back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked
- Rub thumbs and fingers individually
- Scrub fingertips in palm forming a circle
- Rinse hands
- Dry Hands w/ paper towel
- Use towel to turn off faucet

Isolation Gown, n95 face piece respirator, face mask if respirator isn’t available, face shield,goggles, disposable gloves (never leave operators wearing gloves)
In the world of hand washing, what are hand washing, antiseptic hand washing , alcohol based hand rub, and surgical antisepsis involves with ?
Regular hand washing - soap and water for 15-20 seconds . Do when hands are soiled
Antiseptic hand wash- soap, water, and detergents that have an antiseptic (disease free) agent (Chlorhexidine, dettol , etc…) . Do before/after treating each pt, after barehand touching contaminated items , before and after removing gloves
Alcohol based handrub- rub hands with alcohol containing preparation
Surgical antisepsis- wash with antiseptic soap and or an alcohol based handrub before a surgical procedure
Is it hygienic to top off a partially empty soap dispenser?
No , it’s not hygienic because closed soap containers need to be washed and dried before refilling
What things should you consider when trying to choose the proper PPE?
You should consider the type of exposure anticipated (splash/spray/ or touch exposure), durability of PPE for the task, and fit of PPE
