What are causes of failure of child protection?
Poor communication

What are adverse childhood experiences?
Stressful events in childhood that can have a profound impact on an individual’s present and future health
How do we protect a child form neglect or abuse?
They need not have taken place, it is sufficient if there is risk for harm
For sexual, physical, and emotional abuse is their need for immediate protection?
Sexual - yes
Physical - usually
Emotional - no
Are there conditions that can mimic bruising?
Yes
What are laws regarding culture and FGM?
Culture cannot condone harm to the child
What are risk factors about the child for abuse?
Disability Complex health needs Large families Unwanted pregnancy Pre school age
What are risk factors about the parent for abuse?
Mental health Substance misuse Learning disability Domestic abuse Non engaging parent
How can you recognise children experiencing or at risk of harm?
Knowledge of child development and knowing when something isnt right
Understanding parent/carer and child interactions
Impact on children of parental lifestyles/behaviours
Understand and consider behavioural presentations of children and young people
