Slow movement of manuhiri onto marae atea. Haka pōwhiri can be performed.

Performance by fit young warrior of tangata whenua, shows mana ofmarae by demonstrating knowledge and ability. Determines intentions of visiting party. Dart/feather/leaves laid on ground, if picked up shows manuhiri come in peace.
Karanga
Calling between groups by women, gathers knowledge about groups, acknowledges dead, welcomes manuhiri onto marae.
Tangi
Crying (in memory of the dead)
Whaikōrero
Speaking between the groups, performed by men with high mana from both sides, men sit on chairs at the front, women sit on the ground at the back.
Tauututu
Tangata whenua start the whaikōrero then alternate speakers between manuhiri and tangata whenua

All locals speak first

Pressing together of noses, represents the breath of life from Tāne to Hine-hau-one.
