Powerpoint 3: Infant Cognitive and Perceptual Measures Flashcards
who is Baldwin?
A psychologist who was very prominant and a beginnig of developmental research (Piaget used his research) but his name has been dropped from alot since he was causght with prostitutes
what are baby bibliographie?
journals of babies, first development methods, 1800-1900s
who began systematically observing kids first?
baldwin
who developed questionaire to learna bout developemtn first?
hall (1890s) some research still holds till today
who created school testing and assessments to see which kids would do well in school?
binet and simon
who studied “defective” children to learn more about atypical and typical devlopment. Who were the “defectove children”
freud and vygotsky
ADHD
Trauma
autism
who developed “clinical” methods
piaget
- but its actually called experimental testing today
what did piaget study in “clinical” methods from the 1930s - onward
infants motor behaviour
what did fantz study in “clinical” methods frmo the 1960s - onward
infants looking behaviour
at what age can babies od visiable displacements?
about 2 years
- put object inside another object and move that object around, then the infant can find the object - kind of like that road-side magician scam
how can we study what infants touch/grab to determine what they know
if they believe things belong to two seperate categories, infants will touch things alike first before moving to another category
what is sticky mittens? what have we learned from them?
mittens that have velcro that can cling to objects that have velcro so infants can pick up things before their hands have the motor control to do so themselves
we learn that after infants grab tins they look up more at the face right afterward - better socail interactions once they can grab things
how do we use sucking when studying babies? what is HAS?
interested in something they will suck harder and faster - can train babies to suck at rates for certain stimili - can learn what they like to see
High Amplitude Sucking
what have we learned aobut babies’ head turning
sound localization is present in new borns, disappears between 2-3 months old, and reappers later (U-shaped curve) maybe reflex from birth then later its voluntary; can also train babies with this
new born baby vs older baby :
what does their heart rates mean
newborn:
increase - new stimulus
older baby:
increase: fearful
decrease: new stimulus
proposes a measurement of equivalence issue
- change of heart rate = something is different
what do babies do if there is a looming object? how do we use this?
they throw their arms out if a looming object is near… helps us test depth perception
at what age do infants have a social smile? what do we use this for?
6 months; measure social responses, study when they begin to recognize themselves in the mirror since they will smile at themselves
visual interest test. how does it work?
Researchers show two different pictures
See how much time they look at one picture and the other irrespective of side - tells you which one they prefer to look like; look more at the one they prefer; really dislike - look at less than other; look about the same if they don’t prefer either
- can tell us what they can discrimminate and what they prefer
what do babies seem to prefer looking at?
moderately complex stimuli
human faces over other kinds of similarly complex stimuli
