Growth Parable: Secretly Growing Seed

A

The seed grows exactly as it is designed to do. It has cooperation (farmer) but the source or power of its growth comes not from the farmer but within its own design. It can neither be nor do anything else.
The kingdom of God was “born that way.”

Days of Noah – Matthew 24:37; Luke 17:26

A
  • Matthew 24:36-39 “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.”

Q

John Wesley’s Final Goal

A

John Wesley emphasizes the final goal but not exclusive of experiencing in this present life the life of the final kingdom. That is experience is holiness.

“The kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God are but two phrases for the same thing. They mean, not barely a future happy state in heaven, but a state to be enjoyed on earth; the proper disposition for the glory of heaven, rather than the possession of it.”

18
Q

Wesley’s Three Holiness points

A

Further, Wesley saw this final goal as having already begun in the Christian life, or, the life of holiness, as a

  1. Pilgrim Journey with this present life as one of decision and preparation.
  2. Decision is based on the presence of the kingdom of God already present in the life of the believer. The kingdom we have been invited to enter.
  3. Preparation then is practical holiness since the kingdom is still future and goal of our hope.
19
Q

Realized Eschatology

A

Wesley saw the future kingdom of God/Heaven joined to a present life of holiness in a realized eschatology.

  1. New Way of Life – Love of God and man
  2. Inward Religion – Full Redemption
  3. Social Religion – Working to change lives
  4. Judgement – some now/all later
