Patriarchy
a way of organizing society in which value and power derives from
(1) Being sexed “male” at birth
(2) One’s place in the birth order, with eldest males granted
social, economic, legal and political advantages, resources and
authority.
(3) Adherence to dominant norms of masculinity
Women’s role in earliest patriarchy
- identify and serve needs and interests of males
- follow lead of husband at all times
- turn over earnings to husbands, fathers, or sons
Men’s role in earliest patriarchy
- men are protagonists of society
- men must be in positions of dominance in private and public life
- social rights over women and children
