eastern europe: Serfs were owned by their lords and could not leave land

They had control of AFTERLIFE and they also owned lots of land

Excommunication and why is it important
Excluding one from the participation in the sacrements. it is important because people thought they wouldn’t be able to go to heaven so it convinced people to follow the church
interdict
Pope’s power to put an interdict on a king’s country stating they could not take sacraments.
Happened often when king did pope wrong.
Gave pope TREMENDOUS power over kings.
Usury
church’s Loans at high interest, taking advantages of others’ misfortune
What are monastries and what did people there do?
place where monks and nuns stayed to pray.
They wrote the bible by hand. They kept some of the Greek and Roman writings because they hid the truth.
ALso provided services for the poor.
