Dictatorship
A form of government in which one person or a small group possess absolute power without effective constitutional limits
Nationalism
A sense of pride in, and love of, one’s country; advocacy of political independence for a particular country
Liberalism
Beliefs respecting individual liberties and moderation
Authoritarian
Favouring strict obedience to authority; a term normally associated with dictatorships, where the authority of the government is not to be challenged
Totalitarian
A concept developed by social scientists to describe an extreme form of dictatorship with what appears to be total or near-total control over a society
Communist
A system of government, social and economic organisation that formed the ideology of the Soviet Union and involved government control for the common good
Fascist
A right-wing nationalist political movement that originated in Italy but then gave its name to any nationalist, conservative, authoritarian movement or ideology
Militarist
A strong military influence on a society or its government
Jew
A member of the people and cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who trace their origins through the ancient Hebrew people of Israel to Abraham
Weimar Republic
The government of Germany from 1919 to 1933, so called because the assembly that adopted its constitution met at Weimar from February 6 to August 11, 1919
Minorities
The smaller number or part, especially a number or part representing less than half of the whole
Judaism
The monotheistic religion of the Jews
Nazi Party
The National Socialist German Workers’ Party; a far-right political party in Germany that was active between 1920 and 1945, that created and supported the ideology of National Socialism
Propaganda
Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view
Transnational
Extending or operating across international boundaries
League of Nations
An international diplomatic group developed after World War 1 as a way to solve disputes before they erupted into open warfare
Cult of Personality
A situation in which a public figure (such as a political leader) is deliberately presented to the people of a country as a great person who should be admired and loved
United Nations
An international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights
Interwar
Existing in the period between two wars, especially the two world wars (between 1918-1939)
Censorship
The suppression or prohibition of any parts of books, films, news, etc that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security
Power
The ability or capacity to do something or act in a particular way; the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events
Security
The state of being free from danger or threat
Nazi
A member of the National Socialist German Worker’s Party
Repression
The action of subduing someone or something by force
