Causes of 20th century women’s rights
1) The law favoured me
2) Women could not vote but men could
3) Many felt that if women could vote they would be fairly represented
Events of women’s 20th century rights
1) Suffragettes and the suffragists were created in 1903
2) The NUWSS were peaceful but the WSPU were violent and radical
3) WSPU led by Emmeline Pankhurst, disrupted major political meetings, set fire to buildings and chained themselves to railings
4) 1913, Emily Davison ran in front of kings horse and died, the funeral caused a huge suffragette procession

1)1918 women over 30 and who owned property got the vote which extended to over 21 in 1928

1) Women did not have equal employment rights
2) Equal pay act was passed in 1970
3) Abortion act 1967
Causes of 20th century workers movements
1) Workers were thing to improve conditions and pay before WWI
2)During the war works were happy because industries were nationalised
3) After the war owners wanted to increase working hours and decrease pay
Events of 20th century workers movements
1) 800,000 miners went on strike
2) 4th may 1926, the TUC called a general strike
3) Small disputes between workers and police broke out
4) Government forced workers to call off the strike 9 days after it began
Short term significance of 20th century workers movements
1) Showed the strength of the working class
2) Employees felt they could reduce pay even more which led to mass unemployment and the Great Depression
Long term significance of the 20th century workers movements
1) Strikes became frequent and the government gave into their demands
2) The miners strike of 1985 failed which meant union power was massively reduced and the government were able to remove trade unions
Causes of 20th century minority rights
1) Britain was a nation of immigrants
2) Immigrants tended to the unskilled jobs no matter how skilled they were
3) 75% of immigrants were males, this was because they would send money to their families back home
Events of the 20th century minority rights
1) An increase in migration caused an increase in racism
2) landlords bullied immigrants and specifically increased rent for them
3)Serious racial violence occurred in 1958 where black homes were destroyed and vandalised
4) The national front was formed which called for an end to immigration

1) Government introduced two commonwealth immigration acts in 1962 and 1968 to limit black and Asian immigration
2) 1965- race relations act made racism illegal
Long term significance of 20th century minority rights
1) Brixton riots 1981- after a house burned down where 5 black youths died, many people believed the police were unwilling to protect black people
2) Brixton had the highest crime rates in London so police used stop and search tactics but they were more likely to search blacks than whites
3) 11th April 1981 a running battle developed between the crowd and police after a police officer was hit in the head with a brick
4) Nearly 300 police were hurt and 100 vehicles were destroyed resulting in 82 arrests
