the value of all the resources an individual owns
- e.g, investiments, savings, property
power
the capacity someone has to influence others
- the highest classes have the power to control society’s institutions and the lives of those with less
prestige
the status or social standing someone has and how respected they are by others
social inequality
the unequal distribution of resources, opportunities and priveldges among individuals and groups within society
stratification
a form of social inequality, whereby social groups are ranked one above the other based on factors such as wealth, power and prestige
what is the hope goldthorpe scale?
a scale that classifies people into three categories according to their occupation:
- the service class
- the intermediate class
- the woeking class
the service class:
- a social class with high levels of autonomy and decision making power
- types of occupations may be CEO’s and high ranking government officials
the intermediate class:
- a social class with limited or no authority over others, but more job security
- types of occupations include sales managers, nurses and school teachers
social mobility
the movement or the opportunities for movement between different social classes and the advantages and disadvantages that go with it
absolute mobility
the overall number of individuals from specific origins reaching particular class destinations
relative mobility
the relative chance that a person from a particular class has of moving upwards or downwards
