Agency
A
- Seen as an “individual’s ability to make choices and to effect change through his or her actions” (Schultz, Lavenda and Dods 2015, 112)
- Think ‘agency’ for micro interactions (individual), power for macro interactions (society)
- Structure vs. agency tension

- Based on idea that humans are social, not always acting for themselves

7
Q
False consciousness
A
- Rulers portray their domination as legitimate; subjects accept ruling class ideology
- Subjects somewhat passive and incapable of resistance
8
Q
Persuasion (hegemony)
A
- Rulers want people to see their rule as legitimate, so they offer them mutual accommodations
- Subjects are persuaded to follow leaders
- Hegemony can help to consolidate social organization and political control (can justify itself)
