What is Power?
Power can be described as the capacity of some nation state to influence the behavior of other nations and is generally defined in
terms of resources, such as economic and military might.

What is hard power?
Hard power associated with the ability of a state to change the domestic affairs of other nations through coercion.
Joseph Nye compared “HARD POWER” to sticks and carrots - threats or coercion and payment.
What is soft power?
Soft power is getting the outcomes you want without payment or coercion. But soft power alone can’t produce effective foreign policy.
What is smart power?
Smart power is is a combination of soft power and hard power tools depending on whether would be more effective in a given situation.
What are two big power shifts in the 21st century?
Power transition and Power diffusion
What is power transition?
Power transition is from one dominate state to another – in
the modern world power is being distributed from West to East.
What is power diffusion?
Power diffusion is from governments to nongovernmental actors ranging
from large corporations to non-profits to informal groups, regardless of whether it is
East or West.
