Power
the ability to influence people or an event’s outcome.
e.g voters’ have the power to influence legislation through referendums
Political Ideology
the basic beliefs that one holds about political values, morality, power and the function that a government should play
Political spectrum vs compass
both are methods of classifying political positions
* spectrum- in relation to one another on a line
* compass- on more than one axis
Locke on Power
- believed that ppl hold natural rights which limited the power of a ruler
- This authority didn’t hold absolute power and if they failed to protect the rights and interests of the ppl, they had every right to overthrow them
Locke on State of Nature
believed that this states envokes our moral obligations to act benevolence towards one another, thus promoting peace and co-operation
Hobbes on Power
- believed that the ‘Leviathan’ held absolute power and immune to revolt
Hobbes on State of Nature
equates this state to the state of war where people act selfishly out of either fear or pure malevolence
Authority
power recognised as legitimate
natural law
idea that morals are inherit + not created by society
Left
- Healthcare- Universal healthcare + fundamental right
- Immigration- freedom of movement + it’s a pathway to citizenship
- Abortion- (generally) pro-choice. form of healthcare
Right
- Healthcare- Opposes government universal healthcare +favoirs competition between private insurance companies
- Immigration- stronger border control. Reluctant/anti refugee
- Abortion- against (pro-life)
State of Nature
Hobbes + Locke
the real or hypothetical condition of human beings before or without political affiliations, rules, or norms
Social Contract
Hobbes + Locke
implicit agreement amongst members of a society to co-operate for social benefits such as state protection
