Poultry Flashcards
having to do with birds
Avian
class aves; two legged, warm blooded, egg laying vertebrates
Bird
raised domestically or commercially for meat, eggs, feather
Poultry
small type of chicken
bantam
“normal” size or large size
standard breed
general term for young of chickens, quails, pheasants and other birds
chick
jargon for one-day-old chick
day-old chick
not separated by gender after hatching
straight-run
age range between brooding and sexual maturity
grower
available at all times
ad libitum
regulation of feed intake
restricted or controlled feeding
management of chicks from one day old to about 8 weeks of age
Brooding
pecking of pen mates resulting in injury or death
Cannibalism
process of applying heat to eggs to cause them to hatch
incubation
placement of semen to the oviduct of female
insemination
mounting of female by male facilitating mating
Threading
ready to begin egg production
Point of lay
process of laying eggs
Oviposition
total eggs per nesting attempt
Clutch
investigating nests, selection of nests, oviposition
Nesting behavior
shedding and renewing of feather
Molting
grooming, spreads oil from UROPYGIAL or PREEN GLAND
Preening
getting dust to skin to avoid parasite
Dust bathing
abnormal preference for inedible things to eat
Pica
strike or pick up with the beak or bill
Peck
social hierarchy within birds through pecking
Pecking order
affected by disease or parasitism
Morbidity
birds that die
Mortality
- removing the testes
- young male with testes removed
- Canonization
- Capo
failure to remove all of both testes
Slip
- removal of ovaries
- young female with ovaries
- Popularization
- Poulard
- removing beak tip
- removal of spur
- removal of comb
- removal of wattle
- Debeaking or beak trimming
- Despurring
- Dubbing
- Dewattling
produce and dissipate heat to maintain constant body temperature
homeothermic
birds do not have sweat glands but they use panting mechanism reffered to as what
gular flutter
mechanism used by birds during hot weather to evaporate water from its throat thus reducing body temp.
panting mechanism
range of temp. where animals and poultry use no additional energy to maintain their core body temp.
thermoneutral zone
range of environmental conditions such as temp., humidity, airflow in which an animal appears to have physical and mental well being
thermoneutral zone a.k.a comfort zone
normal body temp. of a bird
41-43°C
thermoneutral zone temp. range
10°C-24°C or (50-75°F)
in this temp. the birds will adjust their behavior and decrease feed intake and production
29°C or 85°F
real danger is when temp. is greater than what
30°C or 86°F
if the body temp reaches 47°C or 117°F they die of what
heart failure
ideal humidity for poultry is
60-80%
age of broilers that are most susceptible to heat stress
5-7 week old
maximum heat stress is from mid-day to 6pm and a successful strategy to withhold feeds is how long
2 hours
they are more tolerant to heat stress
hens
you can manage heat through airflow. airflow at bird’s level is key to removing bird heat
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation✓
2. Feeding
3. Managing water
4. Using electrolytes
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate
6. Supplementing vitamins
birds are hungriest in the morning. provide feed 6 hrs before peak time to reduce heat stress. feed can be reintroduced after peak temp. declines. weight gain is decreased with this method
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation
2. Feeding✓
3. Managing water
4. Using electrolytes
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate
6. Supplementing vitamins
birds increase water intake by 2 to 4 times the normal intake
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation
2. Feeding
3. Managing water✓
4. Using electrolytes
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate
6. Supplementing vitamins
potassium chloride electrolytes appear to increase water intake when provided to drinking water at 0.6% concentration. use for up to three days prior to heat stress period
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation
2. Feeding
3. Managing water
4. Using electrolytes✓
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate
6. Supplementing vitamins
panting and carbon dioxide release can change the acid-base balance in poultry, but also the bicarbonate available for eggshell formation thus sodium bicarbonate can help lessen these changes
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation
2. Feeding
3. Managing water
4. Using electrolytes
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate✓
6. Supplementing vitamins
supplementing drinking water with vitamins (A, D, E and B complex) can be effective at tackling heat stress mortality in broilers. vit C can effectively moderate warm temp. declines in egg prod. and eggshell quality and semen prod.
Managing Heat Stress
1. Providing ventilation
2. Feeding
3. Managing water
4. Using electrolytes
5. Providing sodium bicarbonate
6. Supplementing vitamins✓
