Potassium And Fluids Flashcards
1
Q
What treatment of hyperkalaemia is given to remove potassium from the body ?
A
Calcium resonium as this binds to potassium is the gut increasing secretion in the body.
2
Q
Is potassium lost by vomiting ?
A
NO
3
Q
How does aldosterone increase renal potassium excretion ?
A
Aldosterone increases expression of ENaC and ROMK channels which transports potassium out of the cell and into the lumen of the nephron
4
Q
What affect does trimethoprim have on the nephron ?
A
Trimethoprim is a competitive inhibitor of the epithelial sodium channels. This blocks sodium movement decreasing the driving force for potassium secretion. Therefore it can cause hyperkalaemia
