potassium Flashcards
k FUNTIONS
NORMAL CARDIAC RTHYMS
sketetal and smooth muscle contraction
THINK MUSCLES
how do changes in K impact pH
during acidosis there is too many H atoms in the ICF so K moves out to even the postive charge
what impact does k HAVE ON EKG
HORRIBLE IMPACT IF LEVELS ARENT RIGHT
Hypo-k causes
alcholism malnutrition diurtics direhha vomiting for long time insulin admistration Mg def DKA- diabetic ketoacidosis- this is treated with insulin and when glu goes into the cell so does K so that changes levels outside
hypo- K manifestations
k function- think muscles so if muscles dont have enough k think they wont work as well.
bradycardia
cardiac dysrthymias
shollow breath bc the chest muscles dont work that well
hyper k casues
Shift of the K from ICF to ECF. remeber this is acidosis
renal failure- cannot get enough out in pee
hyperglemica- not enough insulin rmbr k goes into cell with glu
alot of blood transfustions
aldosterone deficit becasue alodstrone swaps K with Na in kideny and excreates K
hyper K manisfestations
think muscle over activity - tingling of lips and fingers
restlessness
cramping in stomach (smooth muscle over reacing)
cardiac dyrthymias
treatments for hyper K
kaexlate- via feces can cause dirreha
IV ca
bicarb bc it promotes K to move intothe cell
