- Overuse of muscles, joints
- Skeletal problems
Spinal problems:
Scoliosis
Lateral changes
Scoliosis – abnormal
lateral curvature of
the spine (should be
straight)
Lumbar or Thoracic
Spinal problems:
Kyphosis and Lordosis
- Exaggerated curvature
- Anterior-posterior changes
• Lordosis – exaggerated
curvature of lumbar spine
• Kyphosis – exaggerated
curvature of thoracic spine
Exercise training can cause postural problems: Athletes:
– Kyphosis
– Scoliosis
– Sick scapula syndrome
Observing posture?
Use vertical line for reference
• IDEAL posture = alignment of
– Head
– Cervical AND lumbar spine
– Hip, knee, ankle
• ALTERED posture
– Counterbalanced
– Pairs of deviations
– Head forward AND legs hyperextended
– Use lateral view for anterior/posterior assessment
– Use anterior/posterior view for lateral assessment
