postpartum blues
rapid cycling mood symptoms during the first postpartum week
S/S of postpartum blues
anxiety, irritability, mood swings, tearfulness, increased sensitivity, despondency, feelings of being overwhelmed, difficulty thinking clearly, fatigue
most prominent symptom of postpartum blues is
emotional liability
postpartum blues usually peaks on days
4 and 5
postpartum blues usually resolves by day

postpartum blues follow up is important b/c up to 20% go on to develop
post partum depression
post partum depression is different from post-partum blues in that
individual with PPD feel worse over time, and changes in mood and behaviour do not go away on their own

S/S PPD
- Restless, Worthless, Guilty, Hopeless, Moody, Sad, Overwhelmed, Loss of enjoyment, Low energy level, Loss of libido
- Cry a lot, lack of energy and motivation
- Unable to make decisions or focus
- Memory loss
- Changes in sleep and/or weight
- Lack of concern for self
- Withdraw from friends and family
- Have pains that do not subside
- Feel negatively toward the baby
- Have appetite disturbances
- Have feelings of isolation from others
- Lack interest in the baby
- Worry about hurting the baby
- Act detached towards others and infant
- Recurrent thoughts of suicide and death
diagnosis of PPD
- EPDS – 10 Qs with 4 possible responses, each response gets scored 0-3, max score of 30
OR
- PDSS self-report scale divided into seven conceptual domains anxiety/insecurity, sleep/eating disturbance, emotional liability, loss of self-esteem, guilt/shame, cognitive impairment, suicidal thoughts. Score range from 35-175
postpartum psychosis
- Severe end of postpartum emotional disorders
- Emergency psychiatric condition can result in a significant increased risk for suicide and infanticide
S/S postpartum psychosis
mood lability, delusional beliefs, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking
postpartum psychosis usually surfaces within ____ months of giving. birth and is manifested by ___________
