Postmodernism Theory Flashcards
Postmodernist Theory - Postmodernity
• Perm unstable world (climate change, pandemic)
• Fragmentwd identities
• Reality is shaped by media-saturated global Village- no longer distinguish between reality + fiction
Postmodernist Theory - Postmodernity + Knowledge - Lyotard - Science
• Lyotard –> Science can’t provide us with objective info - never determin true from false
- provides soc with destructive metanarratives (explanation convincing us life has structure)
Postmodernist Theory - Postmodernism + Stimulation - Baudrillard
• Simulacra –> nothing is real, layer posing over soc as reality
• Stimulation –> reality + meaning replaces by signs + symbols
• Mass media = simulation
Stages of simulation -
- Image reflects reality, makes copy of reality, copy removed from reality + pure simulacrum = image doesn’t relate to any reality
• Hyperreality –> real + imaginary intermingle (filters on social media)
Postmodernist Theory - Postmodern Culture
• Media Saturated –> Postmodern media produces an ever changing stream of images + info - difficult to understand truth (tik tok)
• Culture –> Jameson - Postmodern Culture based on pastiche (culture references past)
• Fragmented Identity –> no longer fixed (too many images we engage with) + combine elements to construct it - express through goods we consume
• Capitalism + Post - fordism –> diversity of specialist product on market - individualistic
Postmodernist Theory - Evaluations
• Marxists –> ignores inequalities - wc aren’t free to construct identity + bourg control media
- people do have the ability to improve soc
- if everything is true, validates immoral positions
• Logical –> Theory is a truth even if it says there is none
Postmodernity - Knowledge - Foucault - Science
• Foucault –> Science isn’t objective, establishes categories leading to exclusion of marginalised groups
- can’t use Science to improve soc –> embrace diverse truths
- homosexuality punished
