• Early Modernism –> Culture characterised by dominant religions
- soc has clear stricture = rulers - peasants
• Modernity –> Culture different to traditional
- positivist- discover science
- enlightenment- look towards Science

• National State –> centralised - NHS + Parliament
• Capitalism –> private ownership + fordist production
• Rationalism –> Science more important than religion
• Individualism –> responsibility to dev life + indiv
Modernism - Modernity + Globalisation
• Increased interconnectedness
• Technological changes –> travel = cheap
• Economic change –> 24hour global economy (buy starbies anywhere)
• Global Politics (Geo-politics) –> EU, NATO, G7
• Changing culture –> products from across world found everywhere
Modernism - Evaluating Modernity
• Scientific explanations brought work to brink of destruction (WW1, 2 + Nazi)
• Capitalist soc = increased inequality
• Lose national identity
Modernism - Late Modernism - Risk Society - Beck
• Late Modernism faces new dangers:
- manufactures risks resulting from human acticity (global warming)
• Reflexive Modernity = take account for risks
• Risk consciousness comes culturally
Modernism - Late Modernism - Reflexivity + disembed - Giddens
• Reflexivity = change on global scale:
- disembedding - no longer need face to face interaction - breaks down geog barrier
- Reflexivity- constantly monitor actions + evaluate ideas
Modernism - Evaluations - Marxists
• Marxists –> WC more likely to be exposed to risks - no material means to move (floods)
- capitalism causes risk not technology
