Q

What is the Postmodernist view of education? (3)

A

There has been a shift in the way the economy works due to globalisation. This has led to an expansion of the service sector.
In a Post-Fordist system, individuals are required to be flexible skilled and adaptable and be able to use advanced technology.
Education has become more diverse and responsive to the needs of individuals, so the role of education is to respond to the changing demands of the workforce.

Q

What are strengths of the Postmodern view of society? (2)

A

It is relevant to today’s society as it acknowledges a variety of educational options. All of the other theories are based on outdated modernist perspectives.
It recognises the impact of globalisation and ICT on the education system, other theories fail to do so.

Q

What are criticisms of the Postmodernist view on education? (2)

A

It doesn’t acknowledge the fact that the educationn system reproduces class and gender inequalities. Feminists and Marxists would agree with this.
Postmodernists overestimated the changes of our experiences of education and the extent of educational choices we have. E.G: even though we have the choice to be home-schooled, less than 1% of children are currently being homeschooled.
